It is believed that tricksters are contacting both mobile and fixed line telephone users, falsely claiming to be telecommunications representatives.
The customer is then told that they have outstanding debts and is asked to reveal private bank card details in order to settle them.
If the customer refuses to give out credit or debit card details, then they are told that their telephone service will be disconnected.
At the end of the conversation, the caller does not hang up - this gives the impression that the customer’s telephone service has been disconnected. This is not the case.
Although this scam can result in customers being temporarily unable to make outgoing calls, this is generally only for a short period of time.
Police advise members of the public that they should never give out personal details, such as credit and debit card numbers or PINs, if they are contacted in circumstances similar to those described.
Anyone with information regarding this, or any other, telephone scam is urged to contact Dorset Police in confidence as soon as possible.
Anyone with information should call Dorset Police in confidence on 01202 22 22 22 or the free and anonymous Crimestoppers line on 0800 555 111, where mobile phone tariffs may apply. |
